Faves

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

Sometimes we don’t talk about ourselves here at the GotVoice blog, and instead focus on stuff we like.  We’ve been recently playing with Faves, which allows you to basically set up links to your favorite web sites and share them with your friends.

It’s a neat way to share things you like, and here’s an example of some “favers” talking about GotVoice.  Let us know what you think of Faves.

Dear Santa, Here’s What I Want for Xmas

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

Here’s the latest email to float into GotVoice Headquarters:

“Here’s an idea for all parents.  If you have a young one who can talk, but not really read or write that well, have him call and tell “Santa” what he wants for Xmas.  Just call your own voicemail and have him leave a message for Santa.  Then, you get a precious recording to keep forever, plus you can forward the message to all of Santa’s representatives - every aunt, grandparent, cousin and other person looking for the perfect toys!”

That’s a great idea.  Let us know if you have and of your holiday tips that involve GotVoice.

Can I Give GotVoice as a Christmas Present?

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

present.jpgWe had a nice email come in the other day. It turns out this person loves GotVoice so much, they want to give it as a Christmas present to their husband who also loves cool products and technology. She asked if there was a way to do this? The answer is yes, though at this point it’s easier to give it to spouses and family members than friends and colleagues.

If you know the person’s email address, phone number, pin code and what carrier they use, then this is easy. The first page of the sign up form will ask for these. Make sure you use your email address (but not the same email address use have for your account). On the next page of the order form, you can insert your own credit card information.

Now, if you don’t know their pin code, just fill in a fake one. They won’t be able to use GotVoice, but they’ll be signed up and will just need to input their real one to activate it. Also, when you give them the gift, they can then change the email address and password to their own.

How do I wrap it?

Well, that will take a little more imagination. You could print out the web site, fold it up and put it in a card. Or if we catch any of our graphic designers threatening to take a coffee break, we’ll sit them back in the chair and make a special gift card for you to print out.

What about my Credit Card?

Your credit card will be attached to their account, so don’t put your Amex Black on there. We’re working on some new billing options, but it’s unclear if we’ll be able to “hide” credit card info from an account in the immediate future. Of course, you can also just sign them up, give them the cash and then watch them put their own card in there. But in the case of gifts for husbands, wives, parents and kids, you are probably all on the same card anyway.

Cell Phone Vital in Recent Birth

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

Here’s a story from Cellular-News.com, but without any other attribution, so take it for what it’s worth.

According to the report…

A woman in Russia has given birth - by the light of cellphones after a power failure plunged the hospital into darkness. Quick thinking nurses borrowed mobile phones from visitors and other medical staff and were able to generate sufficient light by the power of the display screens to help the doctors complete the birth. Both mother and son are doing well. It was not reported if the mother plans to name the baby in honour of the mobile phones in use during the birth.

This is not the first time a medical procedure has been reported to have been carried out by the light of a mobile phone. Last year, there were reports of hospital surgeons in Lahore, Pakistan regularly carrying out medical operations using the light from cellphone screens at times, due to persistent power failures in the national electricity supply.

Oh, and no word yet on whether they used the Voicemail to Text features to get instructions on how to perform any part of the procedure…..

World’s Fastest Blindfolded Texter

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

So, this has little to do with Voice to Text, other than the fact that I know some people who talk slow enough, that the World’s Fastest Texter might be able to shoot me an SMS in less time than it takes them to speak…From Yahoo News Australia…

Kiwi sets record for texting blindfolded
Dunedin (New Zealand) teenager Elliot Nicholls has managed to achieve something the All Blacks and Silver Ferns failed to do this year - win a world title. The 17-year-old John McGlashan College student has become the Guinness Book of Records newest world champion - for texting blindfolded.

Elliott twice broke the previous record texting a 160 character message blindfolded in 51 seconds and then 45 seconds. The old record was set by an Italian at one minute 23 seconds.

Here’s the text he had to complete - see how long it takes you to do with your eyes open….

Technology Ways to Impress Your Relatives This Thanksgiving

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

gv-test-2.jpgWell Happy Thanksgiving. The team here at GotVoice sends along our holiday wishes, as well as some ways to impress Aunt Betty and others with your GotVoice service while lounging around the living room.

1) Have the nieces and nephews call you and leave a voicemail. They’ll think it’s so cool that their voice automatically turns into a text.

2) Take your older relatives to a computer and show them you are keeping an mp3 archive of every voicemail they send you. This works especially well if you have young children. Tell the grandparents they can call 3 month old junior, and you’ll save the voicemail so he can listen when he’s older. Then watch them tear up.

3) Send everyone in your family a Happy Thanksgiving message. Do a quick Broadcast to the whole family, and watch the whole room check their Voicemail at once. Then watch them laugh as they marvel at the new technology you have discovered.

4) Finally, when you are doing receiving accolades for being the “cool uncle” tell everyone they may see their own subscription in their stocking this year. Thanksgiving accolades and Xmas presents people want all at once.

Have a great Thanksgiving. - GotVoice

Retention Efforts - How Much is Too Much?

Monday, November 19th, 2007

It’s an issue every company faces. Just how hard do you make it for a customer to cancel your service? I mean, have you wondered why you can accomplish any Tivo related task from their Web site, but then have to dig up a phone number to cancel? You can change credit cards, schedule programs, even change the name of your DVR, but you can’t tell them you want to drop the service.

Well, ZDNet’s VoIP writer, Russell Shaw, has a pretty fun anecdote from a colleague trying to cancel his Vonage service, which you can read here.
